Kinja'd!!!

Made using an alternative sugar sources: beets.

Kinja'd!!!

I tried to style it as an IPA, but some astringency has presented itself, so the hop flavors are off.

It was also totally an experiment to see what beets could do in the mash.

Cheers!

This is pretty awesome.

What are you doing in this plastic bucket, though? When I’ve made beer we did it in stainless and glass exclusively with masks and carefully cleaning everything.

What’s that smell? Ohhh sweet blood. It’s enough to make a man sick.

beautiful color - did it go sour or just weird?

The initial working title was Beet ‘n Bloody, but transferring out of the fermenter reminded me of Mad Max: Fury Road too much to let slide. Also, I brewed it for a Dead of Winter zombie karaoke party coming soon, so it fits the theme well.

Thanks. The mash was gorgeous:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It didn’t sour, the beets were mashed with the grain. It has a tail end astringency that I can’t account for. My hop schedule was, admittedly, on the strong side for the batch size. But I also used 6 row pale for the first time (enzyme boost.) Maybe I overheated the mash and pulled tannins out. I dunno.

Hopefully it mellows in the keg.

I use glass primarily. But we did two 2.5 gallon batches that weekend, and I didn’t want to break out the 5 or 6 gallon carboy. The other brew (blood orange Porter) was already in the 3 gallon carboy. Do, I was lazy and went with plastic.

As long as you don’t scratch the plastic, it will work just fine. Scratch it, and you’ll never really get it sanitized.

Wait.... Masks? Like surgical masks?

Yeah... Nah. It really isn’t that sensitive. I once dropped a remote thermometer sending unit into a chilled batch of beer and had to go to me elbows to get it out. Cleanliness is always good, but the beer is forgiving.

I once had some rather crunchy friends fix up some juice with beets and the like.

Needless to say, the better 3/4s and I were quite concerned later that day.

Had beet beer once at a beer fest that had 109 samples. The beet beer was like 4 oz sample number 90 I don’t remember much from that night but I do remember the fact that I had beet beer!:)

Beets and wild cherries might make for an interestingly tasty beer.

My first beer-brewing experience produced a batch I liked to call, “The Spoony Brew”...because I dropped my spoon in the wort and had to reach in and get it. Twice.
